Ancient civilizations in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas have long known about the benefits of hemp for pain relief. Modern science has only confirmed its effective, natural pain relieving properties, helping thousands of people manage their chronic pain every day.
As the body of research surrounding cannabidiol (CBD) continues to grow, it may drastically change the pharmaceutical industry altogether and is already having an effect on how people treat their ailments.
Brightfield Group, a hemp market research firm, and HelloMD, an online medical hemp community, conducted a study that showed nearly half of all CBD users have given up prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications in favor of CBD.
Whether hemp-derived CBD or hemp-derived CBD users, 42 percent of the 2,400 respondents in the survey left their traditional medications entirely in favor of hemp. Approximately 66 percent of CBD users indicated that CBD products are “more effective” or “much more effective” in relieving their medical conditions in comparison to over-the-counter products, and 52 percent said CBD products are more or much more effective than prescription medications.
HelloMD claims that CBD can actually be more effective when combined with other cannabinoids, including THC, though more research is needed to determine the right ratio for treatment and prevention of various ailments. The proper dosage is key in treatment with CBD or any hemp-derived products.
With the existing research on cannabinoids, CBD, THC, and related products, combined with the potential for treatment and prevention on a wide range of illnesses, there is a high likelihood that it will change the way people treat their ailments, especially in regards to chronic pain.
There are a number of health benefits to using CBD and many reasons why this is a great option for patients today. As one major consideration, CBD typically has less side-effects than many governments approved medications. It is non-addictive, providing a safe, effective, and natural treatment for pain relief as a viable alternative to commonly prescribed opioids. Most people do not experience any side effects with CBD, unlike opioids, which can cause vomiting and nausea in the short-term, and increased risk of heart attacks or deadly overdose in the long-term. CBD oil does not cause gastrointestinal damage and it is not known to be habit-forming.
However, you are still unlikely to be prescribed CBD by your doctor today due to the opposition surrounding hemp-derived medicine.
While it is still illegal under federal law in the United States, hemp is starting to become legalized at the state level and in other countries.
CBD oil has been shown in countless studies to provide relief to the majority of people who use it, for chronic pain, sports injuries, stress, anxiety, and other ailments. CBD allows patients to cut down on the number of pills they take to relieve their pain on a daily basis.
Chronic pain, whether related to a larger problem or not, is often caused by nerve dysfunction and inflammation, either genetic or due to lifestyle habits. With over 25 million adults reporting some form of chronic pain in 2015 (defined as experiencing over 100 days of pain per year) this is a huge problem, and CBD oil should be considered as a natural pain relief alternative.
CBD oil works to help relieve pain through the endocannabinoid system, finding receptors throughout the body for all-over pain relief. This system controls a wide range of metabolic functions and, while there are many different receptors, CBD primarily works with CB1 and CB2, which are present in the brain and central nervous system, controlling sleep, appetite, mood, smell, and motor control.
Cannabinoids can also be used in combination with opioid medications without harmful side effects. In fact, many patients report that they’ve actually reduced the number of opioids needed to relieve their pain and CBD has reduced the severity of their opioid withdrawal.
CBD without THC does not provide the “high” or “rush,” it just relieves pain. Topically, dissolved under the tongue, or in medication, CBD does not provide a psychoactive effect.
The positive results of CBD in trials with many chronic illnesses is extremely promising. While there is still a time and place for traditional pain medication relief, CBD treatment may be a good place to start if you are suffering from chronic pain.
